Straight Up Writing (6-12) and Every Child a Writer (K-5) are stage-based programs. Students are placed into the appropriate stage for instruction based on a prompted writing assessment scored using the ECAW Placement Rubrics.

The five stages in Straight Up Writing represent middle and high school standards. Each stage includes four standards-based writing products. Kindergarten through fifth grade standards are included in the six stages in Every Child a Writer.
